Art and Challenges and Mixed - Media and Skinny Challenges 4:12 pm

A challenge for Skinny Saturday, hosted this week by, Femmy Brands at Zoiy’s Place and Sarah Drayton at Whimsy Dreams. The theme being, ~Growing Older~.
The vintage photo appears as a miniature cabinet card. I have collected several of these. This was a difficult subject for me. I tried to approach it with humor.
Art and Challenges and Gothic Arches 8:21 pm
This week’s challenge host is Elaine Shannon, her blog is called, Aged To Perfection. The chosen theme was, ~Old School Days~.

It has become rather interesting to me that I had never noticed the presence of the Gothic Arch in so many places until I started working with the shape through art and the weekly challenges. I notice them everywhere now. I notice the shapes that contain the arches. How did I miss them?

There beauty often causes me to stand still , if only for a few moments and take in the details. I have also noticed the lovely settings that surround the found arch.

Art and Challenges and Four by Fours and Mixed - Media 1:19 am

The four by four challenge for this week is ~Doorways~. (The collage is made from magazine cutouts.)
Whether entering a doorway or leaving a doorway brings to mind the beginning of something new. Perhaps a journey with suitcase in hand. It is also a bit scary and mysterious not knowing what is on the other side.
I would like to think there exists doorways such as the one I have created. At the entrance of the door would hang a large black key. The rabbit would tip her hat once the door was unlocked. The smell of every kind of flower over powers you as the kind lady presents you with the diamond crown. She then takes your arm and leads you through the entrance …
There are some wonderful writings and writing exercises at Soul Food Cafe on the very subject of Doors. The website on its own is like entering a magical place.
Art and Art Journals and Extreme Journal and Mixed - Media and Visual Journals 3:19 am

These pages with various shades of green were accomplished to music. I am trying various new sounds as I journal. The music was without words and more on the classical side.

As I continue on this journey I find I am writing more on each page. It is okay to write in two totally different colors of ink and not in complete sentences. A year ago I would not have done this.

The five pages are connected - there is rhyme and reason to be revealed at a future time.

I am also able to paint across the images, to actually cover them up. And, I am really beginning to enjoy the art of tearing. These pages are layers of myself and I am attempting to peel each layer - dig deeper without the fear.

The Four by Four Challenge for this week is The Wild, Wild West. For the back ground I used an Instant Breakfast Box. I found a lovely blog - Cowboy’s Sweetheart , and website - Art by DEB TROTTER whose beautiful art takes the theme of Cowboys and Cowgirls. My images are from ART-E-ZINE where you will find a complete page of vintage cowboy images to download free.

I have longed to be a Cowgirl since I was a child - that was fifty years ago !!!
Tomorrow is the last day to post a comment on this blog and you could receive a free piece of art and surprise gift from me. I will be drawing the name on February 14th, 2008.
Art and Art Journals and Mixed - Media and Visual Journals 5:26 am

I spent a portion of Sunday afternoon just looking through various journals that linger on the shelf in my tiny studio. I became interested in the constants contained in my art work. They are the images, rubber stamp impressions, numbers, bits, etc… that appear in my work over and over again. Some of the symbols have meaning that only I know and others I have yet to discover.

~Symbols - a form, image, or subject representing a meaning other than the one with which it is usually associated.
As to the meaning of symbols here are some definitions I found interesting to explore, Wikipedia, The Dictionary of Symbolism, and Artlex .

~Houses~
I had some problems scanning this piece. I believe it was due to the texture created with the buttons. Parts of the scan continued to blur. I then used the camera which I have yet to learn so much about.
~Scanned Version~
For the theme this new week, Houses, I chose buttons. I would love a house completely made of buttons and live in a place where the sun always shines and the sky is constantly this rich mix of color. I also would love an old fashioned bicycle to ride slowly around the town circle. Art is the stuff dreams are made of !
This was made on heavy cardboard from a sketch pad. I did this as I thought I would make the tiny 4×4’s into some sort of book and this could be a cover.
For other variations on this theme visit the blog at, 4×4 Friday.
Challenges and Gothic Arches and Mixed - Media 3:36 am

This week’s challenge is The Color Purple for making a Gothic Arch. The lovely theme is the idea of Nancy Maxwell James - her beautiful blog is called Vintage Papers.
Please remember to leave a comment in the previous post for
where I will be giving away a piece of art, along with other great artists. Anyone can leave a comment, you do not have to participate to receive the art. I also will be including a surprise gift with the collage, in celebration of Valentines Day.

One World - One Heart Giveaway is hosted by Lisa Oceandreamer, from Heart of the Nest and Imagination Cafe. The give-away date is Valentines Day, February 14, 2008. The event brings the blogging community together from around the world and interact with people we would not ordinarily meet.
The mixed-media collage belong is my contribution. This collage is made with acyclic paints, various rubber stamps, hand painting, and the circles are crocheted by hand with cotton thread.

~A Found Friend~
For the Gothic Arch Challenge this week the theme is Dogs.
Working with the Gothic Arch as I prepare the piece I feel a kind of reverence settle in. A shift occurs - it feels as though with other works, during the process, I am in full throttle, always in fifth gear. The arch pieces, however, come slowly as if traveling in second or third gear. I feel the ‘muse’ guiding with a soft hand.
Here is an incredible place - Hotel de Glace, located in Quebec, Canada. This is a hotel completely made from ice, the photos are beautiful. It has the Gothic Arch shape throughout each and every room. It is worth the visit to the site just to count the arches. I was astonished.
Challenges and Digital Work and Four by Fours and Mixed - Media 2:18 am
This week’s challenge is an open theme - I chose Dolls.

The process for this small collage was a bit different. In Photo Shop I cropped another collage and placed two parts of the collage six times horizontally, leaving small open squares of white on the background. I then went into the piece and and used various brushes. I printed the piece out and taped it to the background with masking tape.
I love dolls, especially the tattered types with uneven hair cuts and those moving fluttering eyes. Sometimes the eye lashes are missing. I often envision a tiny child who took it upon themselves and trimmed the eye lashes after sneaking a pair of scissors from the kitchen drawer. I collect this type - the poor dolls so to speak, lying in dirty cardboard boxes. I find them in the basements of antique stores smelling of mold and kerosene. From where I stand above the box I only can catch the view of unmatched arms and legs. I am not sure what I will do with these dolls and hope someday to create a spectacular piece of art from their unusual haunting beauty.
